Chapter Sixteen

We stopped to pick up our clubs, but he still didn’t let go. I liked this. A lot. Hopefully, my hand wouldn’t sweat. I was suddenly super aware of every minor thing. The way his forefinger moved up and down a little bit, rubbing against my skin. The way he moved closer so that our shoulders nearly touched. My mouth went dry. I couldn’t figure out what to say or do next.

He opened the door for me and only let go of my hand so I could get in the car. I fretted while he made his way around the car. Should I reach over and try to hold his hand now? Would that be too forward, or would he think I didn’t like it? Ugh, this was so stressful.

I just kept my hands in my lap. My lips were dry. I reached down to grab my lip gloss out of my purse, and my left hand dropped onto the edge of my seat. Nate’s fingers slipped over my hand. And just like that, we were holding hands again.

He took me to a place called Serial Grillers for dinner. It was in a small strip mall and seemed like an odd place for a restaurant.

“You like pizza?” he asked.

“Yeah, but this sounds like burger place,” I said.

“It is, but I like their pizzas and calzones.”

At the counter, he handed me a menu. Something was off about the restaurant, but I couldn’t put my finger on what. Its décor was too bland for most restaurants. Plus the setup was strange. You ordered first, then sat down. It smelled like the greasy hole in the wall restaurants my dad loved. Talk about a downer. I didn’t want to think about my dad. But I had trouble getting him out of my head. One look at Nate though and he was long gone. I thought of the possible kiss I would get at the end of the date.

I flipped through the menu, but I didn’t read anything. Would Nate really kiss me? Maybe.

I focused. One of the steak sandwiches was called “Boston Strangler.” There was a pizza called “Natural Born Killers,” and a burger called “Freddy.”

“Um, this place is all about murders, isn’t it?” It was a little creepy but kind of cool in a weird way.

“Yep.”

“How do you know we won’t end up with body parts in our burgers?”

“Just don’t order Hannibal.”

“Right.”

Nate ordered a Texas Chainsaw Massacre pizza, and I got an American Psycho sandwich. We paid for our food and found a table. The food came quickly and we ate silently. I wasn’t sure what to do now. This was all new territory for me. Maybe I should touch up my lip gloss. No, I should wait until later. What if he tried to kiss me before the date was over?

Oh gosh. This was awful. Now I was a nervous wreck. He’d think I was the psycho. I took a deep breath and refocused. The restaurant provided good conversation fodder.

“You know, this is the kind of place I’d expect Ethan to take me to, not you.
